Back on the bus

Having been mostly working in the City for the last two months or so - I’ve been missing my daily bus rides on Route 79. But now I’m back to the former routine and it’s great to be taking my seat on the upper deck once again. The great thing about riding a London bus through the suburbs is the fact that images of life outside the window are so ordinary - and yet the stories they tell can be extra-ordinary - especially if you dwell upon them long enough. The bus ride home provides for an infinity of such images. An infinity of stories.

Viewing life from the upper deck.

It’s good to see you’re back on the bus - and that the pictures from the top deck are back as well. I missed them.

It’s one of the things I enjoy most whenever I’m in London - catching a bus to look down on life outside. When I was there last month, I even ended up on a route 79 bus. :)

Walking to lunch yesterday I saw a similar (very) young couple. He was sitting on the step of an entrance to a building. She was kneeling before him, in his arms and crying. I looked up and saw that there was a gynaecologist in that particular house. I guess they didn’t get the news they were hoping for.

Great photo, Jag. I love the way it contrasts the couple’s steady gaze with the woman’s fleeting glance. Two quite different expressions of desire within the ordinariness of the everyday, just as you suggested. There’s also an interesting contrast between the mother-child power relationship and the egalitarian embrace of the couple.

Stefan: I share your enjoyment too - looking down on life from the upper deck is most satisfying. Glad you managed to ride “my” bus too!

David: that sounds depressing. Poor couple.

Ralph: Cheers! Intriguing analysis - When I first saw that pic - I imagine that the mother is looking at the reflection of herself in the shop window - and I imagine the couple are looking at an advert for a job that one of them dreams about having.
