On Seeing Aishwarya

I finally got to see Aishwarya Rai for real last night! Despite my recent posting saying that I wouldn’t be attending this show - the build up to which has been causing a bit of a sensation in the Asian quarters of London over the last few weeks - I decided to get hold of some tickets for this one-night-only show (called Breathless) at Wembley Arena at the last minute!

Bollywood megastars Hrithik and Aishwarya performing live in London!

Since the venue is literally just a short bus ride away from home - it was really easy to get to. (Click “more” to carry on reading …)

Wembley Arena - as the daylight begins to fade away

But sensibly - we took the car - as we didn’t get home until nearly midnight! The show was scheduled to start at 7:30pm - but didn’t actually get started until 8:30pm - due to the sheer number of people trying to get into the arena. It seems that Asian folks had descended into my neighbourhood from all over the world. Literally! People had travelled from all over UK - as well as from Switzerland, Spain and even Maritius to come see this show! I have never seen so many Asian people together under one roof!

Never-ending lines of people trying to get into Wembley Arena

Anyway - the atmosphere in the Arena was electric! I have been to many concerts before - but apart from Sunidi Chauhan - who was really the only live singer - it was amazing to see how emotionally charged the crowds got when Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai and Fardeen Khan performed on stage - dancing and miming to famous Bollywood film songs. (Even though Fardeen Khan had a fractured foot - and couldn’t dance - he just sat on stage and chatted with audience!).

We in the Route 79 crew were sat in Block D Row 4 - which given that each block was 20 rows and started at A - put us 64 rows away from the stage. The visibility was not good - but was helped a little by some screens on either side of the stage. I felt really sorry for the huge swathes of people behind us - and also the folks on the tiered sections on the sides. This kind of show - where the visuals mean more to the audience than the sound - is just not suited for large venues - and many people will have been disappointed if they didn’t have binoculars. Most of my pictures were not very good - as I had to use full zoom - and so only a small selection are worth looking at here.

The Route 79 crew’s view of the stage.

The most memorable moments of the show - which I guess that only Indian Cinema fans would appreciate - were when Hrithik and Aish put on some stunning dance performances to famous filmi numbers - e.g. the crowd went wild when Aish did her DevdasDola Re Dola” dance - as well as the bit from the film when she spins around and the red powder goes everywhere!

Aish doing her spectacular Devdas dance routines.

Although the concert was fully seated - the crowds were out of their seats and jumping wild at this point! There was one guy sitting not far from us who caused all the heads in our seating area to turn quite often during the show - he got so overwhelmed with the performances - that he would occasionally just get up and start dancing in the aisle - until the stewards had to calm him down and return him to his seat. Trust me - the show had a very profound effect on people - who when we were gathering to be seated earlier seemed very shy, timid and reserved!

Joint dancing by Hrithik and Aishwarya

But by far most of the audience noise (and I mean NOISE - e.g. screaming girls and ladies) was reserved for Hrithik - and the crowds just lost all control of themselves when he did his famous high-energy dances - finishing off one number by taking his T-shirt completely off before walking off the stage!

The noise from the audience was deafening!
Especially whenever Hrithik made some exotic motion with his body.

Hrithik and Aishwarya danced together for several songs - and there was a particularly interesting “romance through the decades” theme for the finale - which got all the stars of the show re-enacting some of the famous cinema hits through the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s up to the present day.

If the organisers wanted to leave people “breathless” - then by and large it was achieved. However, there was a thread of “Indian” organisation throughout - and some of you might understand what I mean: a lot of little things could have been done a little better - and would have made such a dramatic difference to the finesse of the end-product. I don’t have time to write about them here - but might get around to it one day.

Breathless? For many I guess that’s how it felt!

In the end - I enjoyed the show - for having seen Aishwarya for real - in my neighbourhood - was a moment worth paying for! Also - Ms.79 got to see Horrific Roshan too - which pleased here enormously I suppose :-)

Wow! That looks like an amazing night!

Posted by: Lisa on April 12, 2004 02:13 PM

Hey that’s fantastic. I didn’t realise it was such a big event. If it happens again, Margareta and I want to come too. Great pictures also!

Posted by: Marcus on April 12, 2004 05:42 PM

Lisa - it truly was amazing - despite some of the minorly irritating “organisational” failings!

Marcus: Hrithik is a megastar of Indian cinema acting/dancing - and is famous for his muscular physique and high-energy dancing in a unique style. And, of course, many would say that Aish is the most beautfiul woman in the world (possibly next “Bond” girl - yes I know it’ll make you cringe!) - as well as being another megastar of Indian cinema. All in all - it was a great entertaining event. Will definitely let you know if something similar comes up.

I had seen the posters plastered all over town on my way to work. I guess nobody could miss out on the fact they were in Wembley, hence the numbers in the audience. Very impressed you managed to get such good pictures considering the distance between your seats and the stage.

Posted by: stroppycow on April 12, 2004 10:06 PM

So you finally made it there.
Great show, and great pictures that you have taken amid all the crowd and frenzy. And it seems like a huge Indian contingent landed up in Wembley arena
U forgot to mention when it ended.

Posted by: sat on April 13, 2004 05:22 AM

Hi Strop: re the quality of the pics: I took about 50 in total - the ones I put up here are the best of the lot! Whereabouts did you see the posters by the way?

Sat: Cheers! The show ended at just about 11pm. It took about half hour to get out of the car park - and another 15 mins stuck in traffic jams outside Wembley Arena.

Glad u made it and enjoyed it Jag!

Posted by: Chakra on April 13, 2004 09:25 AM

we had our Bollywood night-in on saturday - an indian friend brought around the video ‘Lagaan’ which i thoroughly enjoyed. it was my first taste of Bollywood too!

Posted by: zed on April 13, 2004 01:50 PM

Hi Zoe - yes - I saw your posting and was quite excited by that! Lagaan is a great film - not as “masala” as a lot of mainstream Bollywood - but excellent cinematography and great acting from Amir Khan especially. Amir Khan is one cool actor. Ask your mate to recommend some more “mainstream” Bollywood and see if you get a taste for those - I would recommend as a starter some recent-ish hits like Kabhi Kushie Khabie Gham - or Kuch Kuch Hota Hai - or Kal Ho Na Ho or Mohabattein etc. - movies with lots of colour, great dancing, make you cry, make you laugh kind of stuff - all great examples of what Bollywood calls “formula” film.

Indian cinema is an entire universe of discovery! Hope you like it.

Hi,
My name is Narges from Holland.
Well, I have no complaints, coz HRITHIK had also a show in Holland!
The show was sooo wonderful! The whole crowd went crazy when Hrithik came to perform.
He was with Saif Ali Khan, Lara Dutta, Shaan and Amisha Patel.
My dream came true, and hope to see Hrithik again..

Love you Hrithk!

YOU ALL HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My wife and I have been watching Hindi movies for years and years. We have bought every single movie on DVD with every major star there is. This was the first time we attended a Breathless Concerts event. It was held last night in Oakland, California USA. The show was such a joke that I wrote a letter to Bollywood Concerts because I was so disgusted. Below is the letter I wrote. Respond if you will but you all must have not seen the joke of a concert we attended last evening. Here it is:

My wife and I attended your Breathless Hearththrobs Concert at the Oakland Arena on April 24,2004. The concert was a terrible disappointment. As individuals who have been following along with the Hindi film industry for years, we were so very excited at the prospect of seeing these incredible performers/people in person and enhancing our appreciation for the entire Indian film industry. Unfortunately, we were left quite unhappy with what actually transpired at the concert. Here are a few thoughts that we would like to share and please take them for what they are worth. We do not expect to get a response but if one person reads this e-mail and listens to our comments, it would have been worthwhile for us to offer this feedback:

1) The time on the tickets said 7:00 p.m. We have been to many concerts and most all of them began promptly. Your concert began at 8:30 p.m. If people can’t get their act together and arrive on time, that is their tought loss. Let them miss some of the concert. 1 1/2 hours late to begin is a disgrace.
2) Not everyone in the audience speaks Hindi. I would imagine that the Hindi film industry would like to expand their viewers to other people besides Indians. If so, it would seem to me that in the United Sates, it would be wise to have a host that speaks English (or is willing to speak English). If not, a disclaimer on the promotion or tickets that stae that the concert will be conducted in Hindi would seem only appropriate. When one rents a foreign film, the box says “English subtitles” or “No subtitles” which gives the participant an idea of what to expect. We have no idea that we would not be able to understand the host the entire evening. Thank goodness the stars of the show spoke in English but the host was given so much time to speak during the evening that all the people who could not speak Hindi were alienated whenever he had the microphone.
3) The playback singer Shaan has a wonderful voice. It was remarkable how much time he was given to perform during the show. The reason the arena was filled was to see Hrithik and Fardeen and the beautiful women and the dancing and music. Not many people came to the concert to see Shaan. Why then, would you let him command over an hour of the show for his singing? The ticket and the promotion certainly misrepresented what the actual show was.
4) There was a scene conducted by Shaan where he brought 3 people up from the audience to the stage to sing. The interlude must have taken approximately 30 – 40 minutes. This was unbelievable. People paid a lot of money to see and hear the Hearththrobs and here they all were just stuck listening to three individuals that have nothing to do with anything! The event went on for so long. Everyone around my seating area (we were in the $100/ticket seating) was just bored and angry and yelling for the interlude to end and to “Get on with the show.”
5) Finally, and absolutely MOST IMPORTANTLY, the show was a lie. Hrithink was on stage for about 20 minutes toatal. There was no music from some of his biggest films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai and Yaadein. Songs like Ek Pal, Dil Ne, Dil Miley, You are My Soniya and the main theme song from Kaho Na Pyaar Hai were never even touched despite them being some of the most popular Hindi numbers ever written and performed. Instead, people got a few little pieces of various songs here and there but it was just so brief and so quick, it was horrible. Lara Dutta and Celina Jaitley were amazing but you saw them all of about 10 minues. Even Aishwarya Rai were barely visisble for more than one or two quick numbers during the show. The romance number with Duggu and Rai was incredible but again, all too brief.

The bottom line is that people like ourselves paid $200 to see what we hoped to be an amazing show and instead were given a ridiculous amount of Shaan, your host Shahid, and audience members singing on stage instead of what was expected and certainly what was advertised.

Perhaps there are things we do not know about. Maybe the actors get too tired and this was ll that they could perform. Maybe it is too expensive or too time consuming for them to learn all the dance steps to dance for a few hours (with breaks, of course). This seems unlikely as they already know a lot of the steps from their movies (especially Hrithik). Maybe you could explain that to us?

We thank you for listening to our feedback about your show. Hindi films are incredible and remarkable, but we left the concert feeling empty, cheated, and angry.

Sincerely,

Gerald Spencer

Hi Gerald - many thanks for commenting here.

Well I was absolutely gobsmacked by your story. It sounds nothing like what we experienced here in London. For a start: we didn’t have “Shaan” over here I think Sunidi Chauhan was our equivalent) - and we seemed to have a lot more of Hrithik and Aish than you guys did. And we definitely didn’t have 40 minutes of wasted interlude in the way of audience singers either!

I would have to agree with you on the “Hindi” commentary though - that was a let-down - as even here in the heart of ethnic London - there aren’t a great deal of people who are 100% conversant in Hindi: most Indians in London are Punjabi or Gujurati - so it was a bit tedious trying to keep up with the commentary.

One question I have though - did you not get an overdose of Sunidi Chauhan? She is a fabulous playback singer - and she was the “star” of the show for us - well worth just hearing her sing live in my opinion. Also - it seems that we had a lot more of Lara and Celina than you did.

I think you have every right to complain - it seems that you guys were let down much worse than over here in London. Yes - I have to agree with you on the point about the show starting late - that was not good at all - but it was made up by the fact that we got a very good dose of every artist - and despite some irritations - it was worth the £40 a head that we paid (about $75 US) for seats about 60 rows back from the stage.

Once again - thanks for sharing your story!

hi,Aishwarya RAi u so beautifol.
I like u so much

Posted by: afghan on April 26, 2004 09:17 PM

OMG I hope the other US concerts are not like that one. You have got to be kidding me.…..Duggu for 20 mins.……Ash for 10???!!!! That is ludicrous!God knows I don’t want to see Shaan on stage for an hour no matter how great a singer he is. I want to see Ash and Hrithik.

Posted by: Mansi on April 26, 2004 11:27 PM

Dear Mansi and afghan,

Thank you both so very much for your feedback regarding my post. Believe me when I tell you that I felt a lot better and soothed by reading your support. You can only imagine how frustrated and angry with the whole scenario we are. We got no Sunidi Chauhan. None.

I don’t want to beat a dead horse in to the ground. I just needed to let out some of my frustration. Aish and Hrithik (and Fardeen and Celina and Lara) are some of the most incredible actors/actresses/people one could possibly have the good fortune to witness. Hindi films are beyond compare. But that concert would have left any true fan, in the words of Neeta (Sonia’s cousin)in Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, “empty, empty.” For those who don’t get that reference, watch the scene after Ek Pal in Kaho Na Pyaar Hai. Bye for now Duggu and Aish fans.

Well, i am really mad at Hrithik for not coming in Florida when he is coming to U.S. That’s all i have got to say for him..

Posted by: Srishti on April 27, 2004 01:05 PM

Hi every1 my name is Randeep Dhariwal and im 15 soon to be 16 im going to Riddlesdown High School and im in year 11 studying my GCSE’s. I also went to the concert in London and i really enjoyed it, i think they should do more shows like that firstly because so many people want to see them and they will make a lot of money. Truely that show i think did leave people breathless finally i saw hrithik and aishwarya for the first time. I dont know why but it was mainly based on these two stars but i believe everyone worked well and they done it all together which was what made it excellent so without celina how would the show have started! That was a really nice performance and she is really beautiful. I thought that showing hrithik roshan’s performance last built up the tension and everyone anticipated it thinking when is he going to perform. The funny thing was that the only time people went out of there seats in order to have a break or get some food was when sunidi chauhan performed and at the end of them people quickly rushed back. I thought she sang very well and i stayed in my seat for the whole performance. Also i took a few picture but they didnt come out very gud as i sat a lil too far which was the third row behind the vip section at the bottom and because i did not hav a digital camera, i do now but so wish i had it there so i could hav had better pictures to remember the event by. Also i would like to thank you because you have taken very gud pictures so thank you for showing them, Please if anyone else has any gud pictures could they please email me them on my email address rano9@msn.com, thank you very much to who ever does. And another thing i really cant wait until the realease of lakshya Hrithik ROshan’s next film because the lucky people that went to these concerts would have seen a sneak preview of his song ‘Main aisa kyun hoon’ from the film which looked good, im not sure about the Hrikthik’s Haircut though but still i will go to watch it when it comes out even thought i will be sitting my last GCSE exams that week. Anyone who is interested i think the film is releasing on the 21st of June. Everyone take care and keep posting and i would like to thank the organisers and everyone who has something to do with this site that they are doing a great job. I was also wondering when the DVD for the Breathless concert at Wembley is realeasing so i can go to South Hall to get it thank you, Take care

Posted by: Randeep on May 1, 2004 10:16 PM

Whohooooo got my tickets today. Can’t wait to see Ash and Hrithik from the front row. :)

Posted by: Mansi on May 3, 2004 01:49 AM

Hi Randeep - first of all: many thanks for your comment! I’m glad you enjoyed the show. Yes - I know exactly what you mean when you mention the tension and build-up to Hrithik coming onto the stage - it was excellent!

I honestly thought for a moment that people were geting up to leave after Hrithik finished his first performance! Like you - I stayed put and listened to the Sunidi who was excellent. It turned out that all those people leaving were actually just going for a break or snack like you say.

It seems that you were a few rows in front of me. I was in block D - and it seems that you were in block C. Yes - taking pictures in thsoe conditions from that distance was very difficult - even with a digital camera. I took around 50 pics in total - and only 4 or 5 came out OK really. Thank you - I’m glad you liked them. I have seen some much better and excellent pictures of the Wembley concert at Aishwarya Forever: http://www.aishwarya-forever.com/photos/images/concerts/Breathless2004/index.html

I am also interested in the DVD of the concert - so I will be looking out for that.

Take care and good luck in your exams Randeep!

Nice website…awesome highlights of the show. I just attened the show last night here in Los Angeles, CA. I must admit..seeing Aishwarya Rai in person was just amazing..she’s beautiful…she’s Ms.Bollywood. However, Fardeep Khan was a big disappointment…came out to chat with the audience with his lame jokes. I think A.Rai n R.roshan should have a solo show of their own…what do u guys think???

I am so annoyed with the promoters in Chicago. I travelled all the way from Florida to Chicago with the knowledge from them that I can take in my camera. I get to the door and they say no cameras allowed.…ahhhhhhhhh. :(

The one good thing that came out of this was I got a front row view of Aishwarya FINALLY!!!! Awesome show.…..and whoever said HR and Ash should have done the show themselves I couldn’t agree more (a little biased here). They had very good chemistry together…can’t wait for them to sign that film already.

Posted by: Mansi on May 15, 2004 06:23 PM

Hi Mansi - thanks for coming back here. You know what: I had the same problem - although I didn’t have to travel so far. I wish I had warned you about it beforehand. I took my video camera - as well as my stills camera - and they let me take the stills camera - but not the video camera. A guard escorted me to the reception desk to “check-in” my video cam for safekeeping - but I refused. I said I would rather take it back to my car and store it there. So they let me out to take my handycam back to my car - but instead I just put it in my pocket and came back - and they readmitted me without checking my pocket! In the end I dodn’t bother using it - especially as there were marshalls in the aisle who might have spotted me. In any case - I was very annoyed that they hadn’t warned us first that video cameras were not permitted.

Practically everyone had stills cameras though - it seems that they accepted those.

Glad you enjoyed the show!

Also: hope you like the pic in my May 14th entry - it’s a London-theme montage of Ash.

Hi there aya_huang: thanks you for your comment - but I’m not sure at all about the DVD that you are referring to. Apologies - but perhaps you could email the webmaster of “Aishwarya’s World” - which you can click from the left-hand side of my main page at http://www.route79.com/journal
