Wembley Stadium Part II

There are several options for my journey home once I get to Alperton in West London - and the one I prefer (of course) is Route 79 - which takes me closest to home. But occasionally I get Route 83 to Wembley High Road, and then switch there to Route 79 or Route 204 depending on which comes first. Tonight I got Route 83 - but I must have been sleeping - because I forgot to get off at Wembley High Road in order to switch to Route 79. When I opened my eyes I was faced with the sight of Wembley National Stadium under construction. On seeing this - I remembered a previous posting I made on this topic - and felt obliged to provide an update on how things are going for what will eventually become the world's most spectacular football (soccer) stadium.

If you visited my last posting on this topic - you will notice that the site looks more developed than it did last time. Specifically - you will notice that the framework for the seating bowl is taking shape - and I can tell you for sure that the structure can now be seen from several tens of kilometres away. I'm particularly looking forward to the new "arch" to be erected - which I understand will be visible from Central London - and will surely become a famous London landmark? Indelibly a part of the city's skyline. Diamond Geezer (THE oracle of all things London) recently visited Wembley Park tube station (which is on my local Jubilee Line) and wrote about some facts, history and opinions about Wembley Stadium. All I can say to the famous DG is this: you might not "believe it until you see it" - but since I am seeing it every day - I am confident that it will be there soon - whether London hosts the Olympics or not in 2012! Click here to read some excellent commentary by Diamond Geezer on London's Olympic bid.

Course, I only visited once, so I'm not seeing how fast the stadium is growing. But I must say I can't spot a huge difference between your second photo and my photo taken about a month ago...

Hi DG: You're right - the difference doesn't appear too great - you have to look too closely to notice that these diaginal struts have appeared since the time you took yours (a few weeks ago and the time I took mine (yesterday). The two-dimensions of the photo don't easily convey that these diagonal struts are now formed on two sides of the stadium - and are sort of curved in their formation - making them look like the supporting beams for the incline of the "bowl" that will hold the seats of the stadium. I do agree though - it it's hard to see any difference!

Hi
i lived not so far from wembley high road in a place called Corinium Close. so this pic. like many others in your blog - brought back a lot of wonderful memories

Hi Harini: glad to stimulate some memories! I know Corinium Close! It's just off Dagmar Ave. - which is a steep hill just next to a Route 79 bus stop on Park Lane. It's funny - because I really enjoy the bit of the bus journey down Park Lane towards the High Road - it's so narrow and the bus drivers have a habit of driving too fast around the curve of the road - and it can be very exhilerating! And the next bus top past Dagmar Ave. is the one right outside Chesterfield House (Brent Council Education dept.) which is just on the edge of the railway bridge there. When you are sat on the top deck of the 79 bus - and you look sharp left at this point - you can see the Wembley Stadium site very clearly - and it is a very spectacular view of one end of the stadium.

Hi do you know when your next update is going to be re: Wembley Stadium, the Arch would have been erected by now, and it would be interesting to read what you think of it.

Hi Cracker: many thanks for commenting here. I will definitely do an update on Wembley Stadium soon - the arch has definitely been erected - and it has been in place for a few months. Please be sure to visit my home page at http://www.route79.com/journal - as this is where I will post an update on the stadium construction as soon as I can!
