Fresh Roti (Chappati)

Someone recently asked about how to make fresh roti (chappati). It takes a lot of practise to get it right. Unfortunately - I am not trained in the art of making roti - but I have to take my hat off to Ms.79 - who makes it perfectly - and just watching her doing it is a pleasure indeed. You will notice how she takes the cooking roti off the "thawa" (hotplate) and places it directly onto the flame burner for the finishing off effect. Watch how it "puffs up" gloriously as she turns it over on the raw flame! This method is a sight to behold - and they taste absolutely heavenly when they are buttered whilst hot - and eaten straight away!
Mrs. Route 79: making fresh roti (chappati)
 This time - I have encoded the streaming video to be suitable for a dialup connection (48kbps bitrate) - so as long as you have a fairly up-to-date version of Windows Media Player installed on your PC - then the video should stream just fine. (Fingers crossed!). Please do let me know if this works OK for you! (or not.)

The video did come out ok - but the connection here was too slow. Any lower bit-rate and the video would have been too fuzzy.
Yup - thats the way I like roti - fresh from the stove. And to eat it with Dhal will be too good, when its hot.

Sat: you're right - any lower encoded bitrate and it would have degraded even more seriously than it is already. Also agree 100% - with dhal is perfect.

Chris: thanks for your comment! Glad it seems to work too. The one I put up a few days ago was of too high quality - and required a good broadand connection. With streaming video - it's always a trade-off between quality of the production and the size of the audience.

Hi Marcus - yep - they were very tasty - we had them with the egg-bhurji and chillie-pickle that I described in the most recent recipe.

The video came out very well and it was great watching it.

Indeed it takes a lot of practice to perfect it.. I tried numerous times during my bachelor days and failed.. M&S Tortilla's used to be my saviour then... now, its my wifey dear.

Ah yes - M&S Tortilla's - not a bad substitute - but I always depended upon (and still have quite a lot) pitta bread packets specially made for Indian community - 5 packets of six pitta-breads for £1 from out local Indian shops. Freeze well too.

Thanks for the inspiration 79!
My partner and I love Asian food and have become more and more experimental with our cooking over the past year or so. I think that this could well be one for tonight, maybe with the egg Bhurji!
Watched the video on a broadband setup (150Kbps) and as you would expect, it was fine..
