Hammersmith goodbyes
On the way to work this morning I noticed the seats across the aisle on the upper deck of the bus were ripped and torn.

I know. We'll never know. Sad really. It's how many of us felt all day.

I can understand why somebody would steal... clear personal gain. I can at a push get why somebody would vandalise private property.. no personal gain but the satisfaction that nobody is better off than you are. Vandalsim of public property I just cannot understand. It's like breaking your own stuff, no personal gain and I can't see what satisfaction can be derived from it.
I wonder if the vandals know just how good a picture the cameras on buses can take. Very sharp and in colour.

Agree with you 100% Strop. It's all just too sad really.

Why so worried about a single LAN wire - does it signify the end of your connexion to the digital world? You always have your home with the ADSL connexion and all that.
Of course, the vandalism on the bus is so bad. Such a beautiful seat spoiled to nothingness. Wouldnt the cameras have captured it live?

Hey Sat - a LAN cable without a computer attached to it - is like a tree without leaves; lonely, lifeless and soulless.
:-)
Not sure whether the bus camera will have caught the seat vandal. Possibly - but it's probably unlikely that there would be sufficient footage to identify teh vandal. It's probably not worht pursuing - unless it's a repeat offender and is associated with other crimes.

"Vandalsim of public property I just cannot understand. It’s like breaking your own stuff, no personal gain and I can’t see what satisfaction can be derived from it."
Kids, especially teenage boys, are often plagued by such hormonal anger that they can sometimes hardly prevent themselves from being distructive (my own had a tendency to scratch the paint off her bedroom wall without even realising she was doing it). If they are also cursed with unpleasant home lives or parents who simply don't care about them, these destructive feelings get worse and worse. When they're older (or possibly not much older) and by some accident of nature have their own kids, they are likely to be just as disinterested or violent, continuing the cycle.

It's that feeling of power that you (they?) get. The power you have over someone else by annoying them, even if you're no longer there to see their annoyance.
It's the power thing that I think I witness in my kids sometimes, though they are just annoying each other, or us, to get attention. Thankfully they're too young to be vandals. Not sure if I'm going too far in drawing this parallel but I reckon the motivations are similar.
P.S. Inspired by all I've read here and there, I've been blooging in secret for a month. It's now time to come out of the closet.

Goodness an empty desk. It's like that final look around your house when you move out. Very sad
Good luck in the new place Jag
